The refuge.

The Rifugio Dal Piaz (1993 m) on the Vette Feltrine is located within the Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi along the Alta Via 2, dubbed the “Alta Via delle Leggende”, the High Route of Legends. For those starting this trail in Feltre, the refuge is the first opportunity to sleep at altitude and taste the smell of mountains; instead, for those hiking the Alta Via 2 in the opposite direction, it is the starting point of the last stage heading to Pedavena-Feltre where you can’t miss the biggest Italian Brewery (Birreria Pedavena).

Close to the refuge you can find the Busa delle Vette, a large glacial circus known as “Busa delle Meraviglie” (Basin of Wonders), due to the presence of some botanical rarities such as the Alisso dell’Obir and the Alpine Speronella. The same mountain group where the Rifugio Dal Piaz is located, the Vette Feltrine, offers a wide variety of flora whose flowering peak occurs usually between June and July and gives place to a wonderful view.

History

The same professor Giorgio Dal Piaz had the idea of building a refuge on the mountains of Feltre; somewhen in the Thirties, he donated an important amount of money to a local brewery businessman as a first contribution to the project.

At the beginning of 1962, the Board of the local Italian Alpine Club in Feltre decided to honour its 40th anniversary with a work that stood as a memory of forty years of activity and commitment to mountain and its people. In his search for money, the president met with that local businessman, seriously ill at the time, and received an important and crucial contribution with the condition that the refuge were named for the ninety years old Giorgio Dal Piaz.

On 8 march 1962, the president of the CAI section of Feltre, Walter Bodo, officially announced the project of building a refuge in the Vette Feltrine named for Giorgio Dal Piaz. The opening took place on 22 September 1963, seventeen months after the professor had died.
